NEIGHBORHOOD INFO

West Park is a family neighborhood where residents put down roots and stay for generations. Extending from West 117th Street to the City limits at the Rocky River Reservation, its streets are lined with charming houses that range from luxurious to affordable and were built when fine craftsmanship was the rule. Excellent public and private schools abound in this neighborhood that’s right around the corner from Hopkins International Airport. The name “West Park” derives from a wooded park with a lake that John West operated on his property at Lorain Avenue roughly between W. 138th and 140th Streets. It was originally known as “West’s Park” but evolved into “West Park”. The original John West house, a Cleveland Landmark built in 1846, still stands on W. 138th Street, just south of Lorain Ave. Just around the corner from the West House is Jefferson Park, home to summer festivals and events throughout the year. You will find some of Cleveland’s most diverse, authentic dining within walking distance of Jefferson Park, including Nepali, German, Lebanese, Mexican, and Italian cuisines. At the opposite end of Lorain Ave, Kamm’s Corners has remained a vital retail and entertainment district. Known for its Irish Bent, the district includes Irish pubs, live music, many ethnic cuisines, specialty retail stores and the award winning Kamm’s Corners Farmers Market. Join tens of thousands of visitors for The Hooley on Kamm’s Corners, an annual summertime festival. West Park is more than just the Lorain Avenue corridor. The greater neighborhood is home to more than a dozen smaller neighborhood areas stretching from the northern to the southern border of Cleveland – each one distinct – with parks, strong neighborhood associations, religious organizations, and unique, independent businesses. Come explore!

Spotlight: Der Braumeister is open for business!

A multi-generational family-owned business opened in 1983, Der Braumeister is known around the west side as one of the area’s best hidden gems with an extensive (and often exclusive) craft beer list and authentic cuisine. Jenn Wirtz became the restaurant’s 3rd generation female-owner in 2016 and has not only streamlined the operations and renovated the building’s interior & exterior, she hired new executive Chef Jason Quinlan in late 2020 to bring a level of refinement and elevation with a brand new menu. The restaurant boasts many traditions beloved by the community such as their 12 Beers of Christmas and more recently announced a new Beer of the Month Club and exclusive beer pairing dinners.  Check it out and stop in for Eat & Explore CLE! https://derbrau.com/

Spotlight: Himalayan restaurant serves up authentic Nepali and India cuisine

Did you know that the Bellaire-Puritas area of West Park is home to one of the region’s largest Nepali and Bhutanese immigrant communities? A desire to share Nepali food and culture more broadly was the creative spark that led an entrepreneur from this community to open a restaurant serving authentic, Himalayan cuisine – thus Himalayan Restaurant was born. The restaurant passed to new owners, though still from the Nepali community, last winter. The new owners brought in a second chef and expanded the menu. Nepali food can be described as a cross between Indian and Chinese cuisines. Extensive vegetarian and meat based options are available. Be sure to try the steamed momos during Eat & Explore CLE! https://www.clevelandhimalayanrestaurant.com/

Spotlight: Fill your cravings at Caffe Roma

Check out this cozy, brick-walled Italian cafe serving comfort classics like lasagna along with gelato & espresso during Eat & Explore CLE. The owners of Caffe Roma, Joe and Carolina Coreno, emigrated from Naples Italy to Cleveland in 1965. They opened Caffe Roma twenty years ago in what had been the Cornerstone Bar, and before that, Lorain Grille. Joe had been a hair stylist for nearly forty years before deciding to open a coffee shop in retirement. Carolina kept encouraging him to expand their offerings with more authentic flavors from Naples. As Joe puts it, “we added a little bit of this, and a little bit of that, next thing you know, we’ve got an 80-seat restaurant”. You will not find better, more-authentic, Naples-style pizza, spaghetti & meatballs, and so much more anywhere else in Northeast Ohio. https://www.facebook.com/cafferomaCLE/
