Esperanza Barillas
Clark Fulton

Esperanza Barillas lives in the Clark-Fulton neighborhood. She came to the United States from Guatemala in 1938 and has lived in Cleveland for 38 years. Esperanza ended up in Cleveland after moving from New York City in search of a quieter place to live. She loves living in Clark-Fulton because of the prominent Latino population throughout the neighborhood, making it easy to communicate in her native Spanish language and providing easy access to Latino goods and services, including numerous Latino restaurants. Esperanza dedicates herself to community causes and helping others in any way she can as both a volunteer and a community leader. Esperanza co-founded the Mercedarian Walkers, a group of senior women who promote healthy lifestyles in the neighborhood, and also dedicates her time as an involved member of St. Michael’s Church and through Hispanic Alliance. As a result of her involvement in the community, Esperanza received the Ward 14 Senior of the Year in 2016. She is pictured above with Ward 14 Councilman Brian Cummins.

Christopher Nance
University Circle

Christopher Nance has been in Cleveland for much of his life and currently lives in the University Circle neighborhood. He is the Director of Construction Diversity and Inclusion at the Greater Cleveland Partnership and leads efforts to increase the inclusion of minority contractors in major construction and development projects in the city. Moving to University Circle about ten years ago gave Chris and his family the opportunity to relive his favorite childhood memories, like walking around Wade Lagoon after church and visiting the art museum. Chris loves to volunteer with the National Youth Sports Program. As a resident of the historic Park Lane Villa, Chris feels like he’s “in the middle of everything” and has enjoyed seeing University Circle come to life in the past few years.

Linda Barberic & Keith Berr

Linda Barberic and Keith Berr live and work in the Asia Town community in the St. Clair-Superior district. They were part of the initial artists movement in the Warehouse district in the 80’s, where Keith built his first studio in the Bradley Building and sat on the Warehouse District Board of Directors, with Bill Gould, working with city council to initiate citywide warehouse live/work rehabs.

Twenty-three years ago they bought a ¾ acre vacant lot in Asia Town and built a photo studio, from the ground up. The past 12 years they have been commuting from the Cleveland studio to their second home in Santa Fe and have made a recent commitment to sell the Santa Fe property and make downtown Cleveland their base of operations for Keith Berr Productions, their commercial fine/art photography studio, and Linda’s Somatea business. This decision caused them to expand the Cleveland studio and add a 3,000 square foot custom designed home, with private inner city gardens – a major neighborhood investment in this growing community. Keith now sits on the board of CAN magazine and they love living in their new home among a tight-knit community of artists.
